Radiant Industries is an El Segundo, CA-based startup developing Kaleidos, a portable, containerized nuclear microreactor. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace diesel generators used today to provide critical asset support for hospitals, datacenters, and military bases or to power microgrids at remote sites. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development utilizes modern software engineering to rapidly achieve safe, factory-constructable microreactors leveraging existing, well-qualified materials. Radiant is on a fast track to demonstrate the first fueled operation of a new commercial nuclear reactor design, just three years from now.

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated engineer to own the regulatory engagement and process with the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The regulatory processes and interaction are key to ensuring Kaleidos’s development timeline and successful demonstration.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Own the process development of the regulatory interaction for DOE Authorization and NRC Licensing.

  • Build and improve upon the regulatory engagement plan to foster an iterative and communicative interaction with governing bodies.

  • Operate as an interface and guide between regulators and internal engineers.

  • Resolve conflicts and work with leadership to ensure that information is provided in a timely manner.

  • Develop a streamlined and modern approach to regulatory interaction by working with managers

  • Write scripts and interact with the software and analysis data to produce documentation and track information automatically.

  • Build and manage risk system to comply with NRC regulations.

  • Coordinate internal and external entities to achieve licensing objectives.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or similar technical field from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience certifying, regulating, or auditing hardware that was manufactured, deployed, and iteratively improved.

  • Ability to relocate to Radiant’s office in El Segundo, CA (Greater Los Angeles Area).

  • Ability to work or gain permission to work on export - controlled technologies based in the United States.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a regulatory environment with a device in production.

  • Experience working with the NRC.

  • Nuclear, aerospace, electrical, electronic, and industrial experiences is a plus.

  • Two years’ experience tailoring or implementing NQA-1, SQA-1, ISO9001, AS9100, or other industrial standard.

  • Experience owning, designing, building, or testing hardware that has seen production.

  • Experience managing and executing calibration and other preventive maintenance plans.

  • Full lifecycle engineering ownership of at least one complex subassembly (could be combined experience from multiple subassemblies).

  • Stakeholder identification, requirements definition, concept development, sizing, detail design, engineering drawing creation, risk analysis, supplier development, schedule and cost ownership, hands-on prototype assembly, performance test execution, troubleshooting, and rapid iteration.
