This is a full-time, in-person position based out of our Berkeley, CA office. At Glyphic Biotechnologies, we plan to create the protein revolution for which scientists and researchers have been waiting. We are developing a massively parallel, single-molecule protein sequencing platform that will transform proteomics and usher in a new era of insights into human biology and disease. To date, we have raised >$30M to achieve our vision of next generation protein sequencing.
What we are looking for in you
We are seeking an experienced Director of Protein Sequencing Chemistry to support Glyphic Bio’s development of a next-generation protein sequencing platform. This candidate must have demonstrated success in oligonucleotide and peptide chemistries and the ability to effectively manage other chemists. We value exceptional communication and organization habits, and candidates with a tendency toward systems thinking.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Direct and manage a team of chemists: Provide guidance, mentorship, and leadership to ensure team success in achieving critical milestones. Act as a primary stakeholder in Chemistry activities, including budgeting, goal setting, and performance management that supports company objectives.
Foster a collaborative research environment: Cultivate a culture of open communication, teamwork, and information sharing across the organization.
Drive the development and optimization of protein sequencing chemistries: Lead research efforts focused on oligonucleotide and peptide chemistries, spearheading innovation and technical advancements.
Maintain active involvement in benchwork: While managing the team, continue to contribute directly to experiments, synthesis, and characterization, staying at the forefront of technical developments.
Establish and uphold rigorous standards: Implement and maintain effective processes for data analysis, documentation (e.g., Benchling, Notion), and reporting to ensure project clarity and knowledge transfer.
Contribute to Glyphic's intellectual property portfolio and grants: Actively participate in securing and executing grants, as well as securing patents and other forms of intellectual property protection for our groundbreaking discoveries.
Required Competencies
PhD in Organic Chemistry or a related field.
12+ years of industry experience.
Proven track record in a research-oriented biotech setting, ideally as a senior stakeholder in the development of commercially successful products.
Expertise in protein sequencing-related chemistry. In-depth knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, peptide and oligonucleotide synthesis, and various purification/spectroscopic techniques (HPLC, column chromatography).
Creative thinker, with the ability to approach challenges from unique perspectives and generate novel solutions.
Big-picture thinker, with the capacity to understand the broader context of research efforts and align individual contributions with long-term goals.
A history of working productively with intellectually diverse teams.
Experience in establishing and managing external collaborations and vendor relationships.
Extensive people- and project-management experience.
A focus on team success (vs. individual accolades).
A tendency toward being hyper-organized.
Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
A commitment to maintaining the highest levels of workplace professionalism.
A willingness to self-start, embrace ambiguity and seek out opportunities for company, team, and individual improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience with peptide-modifying chemistries, oligonucleotide chemistries, and DNA sequencing methods, such as sequencing-by-synthesis (SBS) or nanopore sequencing.
Comfortable with common workplace productivity tools (e.g., Slack, Notion, Miro, AirTable).
Physical/Cognitive Requirements
Prompt and regular attendance, punctuality, and availability to work at assigned work location, including adhering to the Department’s attendance policy (e.g., adhering to your work schedule, including but not limited to: scheduled tasks, meetings, meal/rest breaks, etc.).
Ability to work shifts of at least 8 hours, 5 days per week.
Ability to work from a dedicated space that is distraction-free and has a secure, high-speed, internet connection.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-intensity work environment.
Ability to remain seated in a stationary position for prolonged periods.
Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard, computer, and other standard laboratory and facilities equipment.
No heavy lifting is expected, though occasional exertion of about 20 lbs. of force may be required.
Ability to interact with leadership, employees, and members in an appropriate and respectful manner.
Maintains composure during moments of stress, maintains a helpful disposition at all times, and leverages de-escalation skills and techniques when necessary.
Ability to exercise good judgment, work effectively under time constraints, prioritize work, multi-task, and adapt to changing work demands.
