This is a full-time, exempt, on-site position based out of our Berkeley, CA office.

At Glyphic Biotechnologies, we plan to create the protein revolution for which scientists and researchers have been waiting. We are developing a massively parallel, single-molecule protein sequencing platform that will transform proteomics and usher in a new era of insights into human biology and disease. To date, we have raised >$20M from venture partners and non-dilutive grant funding to achieve our vision of next generation protein sequencing.

What we are looking for in you

Glyphic Bio seeks a Staff/Principal Engineer in Microfluidics and Mechanical Engineering to play a critical role in the development of Glyphic’s next generation protein sequencing platform. The candidate will be a primary stakeholder in the development of Glyphic’s sequencing technologies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in product development for life science analytical systems that encompasses instruments, software, and system integration with reagents & consumables. Direct experience with proteomics and/or NGS strongly preferred.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of fluidic systems for Glyphic’s sequencing technologies and products.

  • Design and develop micro-fluidic devices for breadboard and prototype instruments.

  • Contribute to reagent and process development for R&D projects.

  • Evaluate and manage collaborations with external vendors for product development.

  • Collaborate with Product Development and R&D team members to direct product development.

  • Allocate and coordinate engineering team resources (internally and externally with vendors).

Required Competencies

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in engineering, physics, bioengineering, or a related field.

    • For Staff Engineer: Ph.D with 8+ years of industry experience; or M.S. with 12+ years of post-graduate experience.

    • For Principal Engineer: Ph.D with 12+ years of industry experience; or M.S. with 16+ years of post-graduate experience.

  • Previous involvement in the development of a robust, high-quality instrument-based platform for life sciences that has achieved commercial success.

  • Expertise in fluidics simulation and design using relevant software (e.g., Fluent, ANSYS, Solidworks, and COMSOL).

  • A history of working productively with intellectually diverse teams across R&D and Product Development.

  • Experience in establishing and managing external collaborations and vendor relationships.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to communicate rationale of pipeline design and clear visualization of results.

  • A tendency toward being hyper-organized.

  • Ability to work with multiple teams and maintain several projects in parallel.

  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight.

  • A commitment to maintaining the highest levels of workplace professionalism.

  • A willingness to self-start, embrace ambiguity and seek out opportunities for company, team, and individual improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing liquid handling platforms for NGS sample preparation

  • Demonstrated success with magnetic bead handling for life science applications

  • Experience developing modules for DNA/Peptide synthesizers, Edman degradation instruments, and instruments related to proteomics and DNA analysis

Physical/Cognitive Requirements

  • Prompt and regular attendance, punctuality, and availability to work at assigned work location, including adhering to the Department’s attendance policy (e.g., adhering to your work schedule, including but not limited to: scheduled tasks, meetings, meal/rest breaks, etc.).

  • Ability to work shifts of at least 8 hours, 5 days per week.

  • Ability to work from a dedicated space that is distraction-free and has a secure, high-speed, internet connection.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-intensity work environment.

  • Ability to remain seated in a stationary position for prolonged periods.

  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard, computer, and other standard laboratory and facilities equipment.

  • No heavy lifting is expected, though occasional exertion of about 20 lbs. of force may be required.

  • Ability to interact with leadership, employees, and members in an appropriate and respectful manner.

  • Maintains composure during moments of stress, maintains a helpful disposition at all times, and leverages de-escalation skills and techniques when necessary.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, work effectively under time constraints, prioritize work, multi-task, and adapt to changing work demands.
