Character Biosciences is a drug discovery and development company building world-class, deeply-phenotyped databases that integrate genomics with longitudinal clinical and imaging data. Powered by our data platform, Character Bio is currently advancing two programs in Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration with additional programs in earlier stages of discovery research.

We are seeking a talented Senior Associate to perform the statistical genetic analyses utilizing the Character data platform. Reporting to the Human Genetics Lead, this role collaborates with data science, clinical science and drug discovery teams. This position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic growing team and directly contribute to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics.

Responsibilities:

· Independently devise and execute genetic association studies and Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) analyses utilizing Character’s disease progression phenotypes, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and informed decision-making throughout the process.

· Collaborate closely with a diverse team comprising machine learning engineers, data scientists, clinical researchers, and biologists to refine genetic analyses and provide genetic data support.

· Innovatively troubleshoot and enhance analysis, effectively resolving challenges as they arise.

· Efficiently oversee version control of both code and data, maintaining an organized and accessible repository.

· Coordinate and manage tasks across multiple projects, showcasing adept prioritization and strategic planning abilities.

· Produce data of publication quality, adhering to rigorous standards.

· Summarize, analyze, and effectively communicate results during team meetings, ensuring clarity and comprehension among colleagues.

Key qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 4 years (or master’s degree with 1-2 years) of research involvement in statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, biology or computational biology.

· Demonstrated experience in genetic association studies utilizing various genetic analysis methodologies, tools, and resources such as PLINK, REGENIE, EPACTS, GATK, bcftools/vcftools, VEP, SnpEff/SnpSift, etc.

· Proficiency in R and/or Python programming languages; Ability to navigate comfortably in a Linux environment.

· Familiarity with cloud computing environments is advantageous.

· Knowledge and experience in in silico functional analysis techniques such as Mendelian randomization, co-localization, multi-trait analyses, fine mapping, etc., are desirable.

· Preference for experience with cohort or clinical data; additional experience with longitudinal data is beneficial.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

· Requires adaptability in managing evolving priorities.

· Exceptional troubleshooting and organizational abilities, coupled with the capability to thrive in a dynamic startup environment, are crucial.

· Must demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
