Senior Network Automation Engineer
Astranis
As a team, we’ve launched five satellites into orbit, signed ten commercial deals worth over $1 billion in revenue, raised over $750 million from top global investors, and recruited a team of over 400 world-class engineers. We all work out of our (legendary) San Francisco office, which was once used to build ships during the World Wars.
Our satellites, which operate from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh only 400 kg and utilize a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite can connect over two million people, and we’re very excited for the impact we’ll soon have in the Philippines, Mexico, and more!
Backed by substantial funding and a passionate, collaborative team, we offer a rewarding work environment where you'll learn and make a significant impact, no matter where you are in your career.
Senior Network Automation Engineer
As a Senior Network Automation Engineer, you will help design, develop, and automate our global network services infrastructure that delivers satellite-based connectivity to our commercial and government customers. This role blends traditional network engineering expertise with modern DevOps and automation practices to ensure our network is reliable, scalable, secure, and easy to operate.
At its core, you’ll work to understand diverse internal and external use cases and develop automated solutions that meet customer SLAs while maintaining high service quality. You’ll be a key driver in transforming manual network operations into automated, repeatable, and resilient workflows.
Role:
- Design, implement, and manage automated network solutions with a focus on reliability, maintainability, scalability, and security
- Develop and maintain automation frameworks for network provisioning, configuration management, and monitoring (e.g., using Ansible, Terraform, Python, cacti, PRTG)
- Conduct detailed network analysis, performance tuning, and troubleshooting—leveraging automation to streamline these processes
- Manage deployment of satellite ground systems in private data centers and integrate them seamlessly with customer networks
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to design automated workflows for network infrastructure deployment and updates
- Participate in on-call rotations to rapidly troubleshoot and resolve network issues, with an emphasis on automated incident response
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers in both networking and automation best practices
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in network engineering, with at least 2+ years focused on network automation or DevOps integration
- Deep understanding of routing protocols, particularly BGP, EIGRP, and OSPF
- Hands-on experience with enterprise LAN/WAN networking and Layer 2/Layer 3 protocols including LACP, HSRP, MPLS, Spanning Tree, VLANs, GRE, GTP, IPv4, and IPv6
- Proven ability to design and deploy automated network configurations and provisioning at scale along with effective monitoring of hundreds of nodes and network links
- Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent
- Experience building monitoring infrastructure using tools such as cacti, zabbix, PRTG
- Strong scripting skills in Python, Bash, or similar
- Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and version control systems (e.g., Git) for network configuration management
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to handle on-call support and occasional travel
Bonus:
- Relevant certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent
- Experience automating deployments for Cisco, Juniper, and Aruba platforms
- Background with network telemetry, API-driven configuration, and monitoring tools
- Exposure to satellite network hub systems and network operations
- Experience with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) in networking contexts
- Experience with network security practices, tools, and protocols
