Full job description
Atomos Space is a venture-funded startup in Denver, CO seeking to reduce the cost of access to space by developing orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs) to solve the “last mile” problem in Earth orbit. Atomos is currently seeking an experienced mechanical engineer with relevant prior work in the design, analysis, build, and test of large deployable spacecraft structures and space-rated mechanisms.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Atomos, you will be conceiving and realizing novel spacecraft structures – structural tanks; modular bus structures; lightweight deployables for solar arrays and thermal management systems. Every kilogram of mass buys our orbital transfer vehicles more speed. Every additional cubic centimeter of propellant storage brings our systems more delta-V. Your products will be critical in the realization of our OTV fleet and their capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, build, and test cost-effective space-rated mechanisms
- Design, analyze, build, and test cost-effective large space-rated deployable structures
- Contribute to a lean, rapid verification and validation campaign for equipment designed
- Cooperate with vehicle systems engineering team to seamlessly integrate mechanical systems into overarching vehicle architecture and execute/support associated verification and validation activities and documentation
- Be capable of both working independently and seamlessly integrating with a team depending on the project
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or similar qualification
- Minimum 5 years of experience in space industry or related design work (or 3 years of experience with Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering)
- Experience contributing to space hardware design and development, with demonstrable knowledge of all requisite steps
- Experience in completing analytical and/or test-based structural and mechanism verification for flight programs.
- US Person*
Desired Experience
- Operating knowledge of best space systems engineering practices
- Experience with design, analysis, integration, and test of spacecraft structures and mechanisms
- Experience with mechanisms design, testing, and operation
- Ability to undertake innovative and cost-effective solutions for space hardware
- Experience owning and complying with mechanical quality control measures
- Excellent acumen with mechanical design packages, including (but not limited to) drawings, interface control documents, systems documents, etc.
- Experience with SolidWorks (Design, Simulation, PDM, etc.), HYPERMESH structural FEM/FEA tools, Python, C++/C, Thermal Desktop
